COP27: highlights and shortcomings

This November saw the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP27) take place in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt. Despite some positive developments, many delegations expressed their disappointment at the lack of ambition to tackle what is arguably the greatest challenge facing humanity today. Those present did reaffirm the commitment they made in 2015 at the Paris summit to limit the global temperature rise to 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels. However, they were unable to reach an agreement to phase out fossil fuels entirely, a crucial measure to achieve this goal.
